Join us for a 1 hour evening tour of the magnificent Bialystoker Synagogue, which was built in 1826 as a Methodist Church, and believed to be a stop on the Underground Railroad. Hear a presentation of Lower East Side history and learn about the largest active congregation on the Lower East Side today. Marvel at this synagogue which is covered in murals and showcases Tiffany inspired glass windows.
After the tour of Bialystoker, author Michael J. Weinstein will talk about his book Ten Times Chai, which has beautiful photos of 180 Orthodox Synagogues throughout the 5 boroughs of NYC. The 613 color photos represent the 613 mitzvot, or commandants of Judaism in the Torah. Michael will explain how the book came to be, and you will have an opportunity to buy a signed copy. He is excited about this presentation because Bialystoker was one of his favorite synagogues of the 180 that he photographed.
There will be an additional $2 charge for tickets purchased the day of the tour.
