Wandering Jews: a Brother and Sister document their travels to Jewish sites with social media. A New Talk on Zoom

  • This is an online event on Zoom (map)

The story of Colonial Jews in early New York City, then known as New Amsterdam or the New Netherlands, is closely tied to the history of the first Jews that settled in Suriname and Curacao. Many of the first families in each location had connections and came from Dutch Brazil.

David Wachs, former LESJC President of the Board and tour guide, and his sister, Heidi, created the WanderingJews social media accounts in 2016 en route to celebrate Rosh Hashanah with a number of Jewish communities in Alabama. As the WanderingJews, David and Heidi are dedicated to visiting and documenting historic synagogues, cemeteries, and other sites of Jewish significance throughout the world, especially communities that are fading or no longer exist. As part of this project, in December 2017, they traveled to Suriname and Curacao.

Join us for this new presentation on Zoom as they share what inspired them to create the WanderingJews, tell us about the places they have traveled on this quest, and describe how they hacked their way through the jungle in Suriname with machetes to visit a Jewish cemetery dating to the 1600s.

THIS TALK IS LIMITED TO 100 REGISTRANTS!
