Tenement Chic North: Ornamentation and Architectural Tour of the East Village

  • Meet on the SE corner of Second Avenue & East 8th Street New York, NY, 10003 United States (map)

Garish grotesques, mythical beasts, beautiful botanicals, ornate cornices, columns & pilasters -- these are but a few examples of architectural ornamentation that adorn otherwise drab tenements throughout the Lower East Side.

Who were the anonymous artisans that created these treasures?

What developments in building technology allowed for these applications?

What motivated developers and landlords to increase their costs to accommodate them?

Join urban historian Barry Feldman, our housing specialist for further exploration of tenement history and ornamental architecture north of Houston.

There will be opportunity to analyze, compare, admire and discuss a wide sampling of building facades as you walk the streets of the East Village. Additionally, the development of the tenement and the architectural styles of nineteenth and twentieth century townhouses will be discussed

Tickets are $24 for an adult /$22 for a senior (65+) or student (under 21) and

an additional $3PP the day of the tour.
