Tour #6: O! Multitudes! II: Three Centuries of Domestic Architecture on the Lower East Side

The Lower East Side is the iconic New York City immigrant neighborhood. For the past century and a half, immigrants have crowded its streets and tenements, and established cultural, social and religious institutions. On this tour, housing on the Lower East Side will continue to be explored.

  • Learn how to distinguish a tenement from a row house.
  • See examples of pre-law, old law and new law tenements.
  • Discover double decker rear tenements.
  • Visit middle income co-ops with socialist motif murals, as well as recent housing.
  • Participants will receive a packet of primary sources documenting the sites visited.

In both O! Multitudes! tours, the disparate interests that contributed to the housing profile of New York City will be discussed.

You can enjoy O! Multitudes! II without having participated in O! Multitudes! I.
